The Bridge over the Gollach with Status of
Saint John Nepomuk
The little bridge crossing the river is dedicated to Saint John Nepomuk, a statue of whom stands on the bridge railing. Little known in America, Nepomuk was a 14th century priest in Prague who was the confessor to the consort of King of Bohemia, King Wenceslaus. According to the story, “Good King Wenceslaus” suspected his wife of adultery and pressed Nepomuk to repeat what his wife told the priest in the confessional. Nepomuk refused and was tortured and thrown off the Charles Bridge in Prague to drown in the river below. Hence, he is the saint who protects against floods and is a popular figure on many bridges throughout Europe. Standing by the statue, take a look at the banks of the stream and the proximity of the buildings to it. No wonder the neighbors prayed to Nepomuk to protect them against floods!
On the other side of the bridge is a charming half-timbered building, the old Toll House.
